One of the most frustrating things that can happen to any website owner is to have a beautifully designed website with lots of quality contents published on it and still yet don’t have any visitors.

As long as owning a website is concerned, getting traffic is very important as it helps to build your audience base and increases your chances of making sales or getting clicks to your ads.  

On the internet today, there are over 500 million active blogs out there with the top brands getting all the traffic and making it look like small blogs can’t survive. The truth is they can.

Since it looks difficult to get traffic to a website, this has made lot of people give up on their dreams on owning a website.

Before I dive right into the steps you can use to increase your website traffic, I want to highlight two traffic sources for you.

There are two ways which any one can use in getting traffic on the internet and they include paid traffic and organic traffic.

When we talk of paid traffic, this involves you spending money to get people to your website.

This can be inform of running advertisement on Google, Bing, social media platforms such as Facebook, twitter, instagram etc.

Moving over to organic traffic, it involves you getting traffic to your website without having to spend a dime. This kind of traffic can be gotten from search engines.

For example “If someone searches for a particular topic and you have written about that topic and search engine finds your content relevant it shows your content to the person which when he/she clicks on the link, it will take them straight to your page.

This way you can get tons of traffic to your website without spending money.

With this said lets jump into the steps you can use to increase your website traffic.

Have you ever heard the word that says “content is king”?  Well this is very true. When a visitor visits your website and don’t find relevant contents they tend not to come back again. Having quality contents will also help your ranking on the search engines.


One of the mistakes you can ever make is to write content and post it on your website without making sure that it is well optimised for search engine traffic. This would involve you using keywords that you can rank for easily on search engines. There are tools out there that can help you when it comes to picking the right keywords to use in your content. Tools such as SEMrush, Google keyword planner, uber suggest can help you in choosing the right keyword. If you are really going to get organic traffic you have to take SEO seriously.

Content Headlines

This is what people see before clicking on your post. Writing attractive headlines has the capacity of increasing your website traffic. Have you ever read a headline that made you click on the post but you ended up seeing contents that are not related to the headlines? I have. Use Quality Images

Similar to your headlines, one of the things that attract people to a website is the images they see. Human beings are moved by what they see so inputting quality and attractive images to your contents can as well increase your traffic. There are various sources where websites owners can get free quality images to use. Unsplash.com, pexel.com, etc. are great places for images. If you intend to create your own images or add text to images you can use canva.com to get it done.

Increase Your Website Load Speed

If your website takes too long to load people will get tired and skip to another website to get the information they need. This is why having to always check how fast your website load is necessary. There are different tools you can use to check the load speed of your website and they include Google Page Speed Insight Tool and pingdom

Make Your Website Mobile Friendly

More than 70% of online searches are done using either a mobile phone or a tablet, this why you have to make sure that your website is mobile friendly. If you are using a WordPress website there are plugins that you can integrate to make your website mobile friendly. You can use either WPtouch mobile plugin or jetpack.

Use Internal Links

Most people just write a blog post and publish it without interlinking them. This involves you putting links to other of your previous contents in a particular post. Once you interlink your contents, this can increase the time people spend on your post and when Google sees that people spend more time on your post they are likely to rank you post high on the search engine.

Explore Social Media And Forums

Social media is a great platform that can be used to get traffic to any website. There are lots of paid and free traffic you can get using social media. I have used Facebook to get more that 3,500 followers on a page without spending a dime. There are different social media platforms that you can leverage to get more traffic to your blog and they include Facebook, twitter, pinterest, instagram etc.  Forums are also a great place to get insane amount of traffic to your websites. In Nigeria there are lots of forums that you can use.

Paid Advertisement

It doesn’t hurt to once in a while run advertisement. Truth is using SEO to get traffic to your website takes a while so you can as well use paid ads to get traffic to your website. For me social media is the best place to run advertisement because with as little as $5 you can set up an ad on Facebook.
