When you step out of your home and take a look at young people both male and female you will get to notice that 80-90% of them are wearing T-shirt. They wear it not necessary because of the weather but T-shirt is gradually taking over as we get to see celebrities and even workers in different organisation (excluding bankers) rock T-shirt which makes it cool.
The T-shirt business is growing rapidly as billions of dollars are spent in the purchase of T-shirt every year and unlike other business, the T-shirt printing business can be started with little capital and can be done in your home when you get the right equipment.
Every Nigerian youth, children and even adults rock T-shirt everyday which makes it a lucrative business to jump into if you know what you doing.
For lovers of fashion and those that are willing to go into this business and put in the hard work, in this article I will be showing you ways in which you can use to start your own T-shirt printing business and make money from the comfort of your home.
What TO Consider Before Starting A T-Shirt Printing Business
1) Identify Your Customers
This is a crucial aspect you need to consider before starting out. Yes we know that everybody wears T-shirt but having to know what people like is key for example some people like wearing T-shirt with words on it while other like wearing T-shirt with different designs on them. When you are able to identify your customer’s needs, then you can start planning towards that direction.
Having the right location for your business is also important for the success of that business. For example if you want to start a T-shirt business and you living in the North, you know that the business will not do well as it would in the South, East and West. Northerners are none for their Kaftan.
Creating a custom T-shirt is one thing and having to sell them is another. This is wear surveying your competitors comes in. you want to know how much they sell their T-shirts so you don’t put an outrageous price on your own which will make people run from you.
How To Setup Your T-shirt Printing Business
1) Have Great Design Ideas
I put this first as this have a huge role to play in the success of your business. We all are moved by what we see and when you have a great design printed on a T-shirt people will want to get it not minding the price on it. If you are good at graphic design you can make designs by yourself or hire a freelancer to do it for you. My Thought: when you starting a business like this and you serious about it, I advise you go and learn Graphic Designing which in the long run will save you money.
2) Write A business Plan
Writing a business plan is a smart thing to do for every business and yours is no exception. This will help you know your targeted audiences, how much you putting into the business and your sales strategy.
3) Register Your Business
This involves you registering a business name with Cooperate Affairs Commission (CAC). You have to choose a very good business name as your name will reflect on your T-shirt. Seat down and figure out a name that will fit the business.
4) Get A Logo
Getting a professional logo helps your business stand out. You need something that people can relate to which will eventually make your brand a house whole name.
5) Get Quality Plain T-shirts
Most businesses fail because they offer their clients fake and substandard materials so if you want people to keep coming back to you, you have to get quality T-shirts. You can go to sites like aliexpress.com and search for manufacturers that can supply you high quality T-shirt for cheap price.
6) Get Your Printing Equipment’s
Here are the equipment’s you would need
i)Heat Transfer Paper: a heat transfer paper is just like your normal A4 papers you use in printing but it’s much better as it can be used to transfer your designs to your clothes. There are two types of heat transfer papers one for light fabric and the other for dark fabric. (you can head over to YouTube to get to know how to use both)
ii)Printer: the best printer to use is an ink jet printer as it allows the heat transfer paper captures your design so it can be transferred to your T-shirt in coloured and not black and white.
iii) Heat Press Machine: An heat press machine is used to transfer your designs from the heat transfer paper to your T-shirt.
How it’s done
When you have finished creating the design you would like to put on your T-shirt, you put the Heat Transfer Paper into the Ink Jet Printer and print the design on the paper just as you print on your normal A4 papers. When this is done, you straighten you T-shirt then place your T-shirt on the Heat Press Machine and also place the Heat Transfer Paper on the shirt and press them together. This will transfer the design directly to the T-shirt. You would be amazed how this thing works.
If you don’t have the money to purchase a Heat Press Machine you can also use you normal Iron you use in ironing you clothes to transfer the design to your T-shirt. (please time would not allow me to do a video on this but head over to YouTube and search for videos on how to design a T-shirt and watch someone do it live before you try it.)
7) Promote Your Business
After creating your T-shirt if you leave it at home and expect people to find you, you will never make any money. Here are ways to promote your T-shirt
i)Wear them: This is a great way as it lets people see how the design is which will make them want to purchase it. When you wear your designs and go to functions or outing when people see it and like it, they would want to know were you got it from so they can also get theirs and wala you in business
ii)Social Media: Social media is a great way to promote your products as you are able to reach thousands if not millions of people and market your products to them.
iii) E-commerce: Well as you just starting out, you might not be able to open your own e-commerce website but you can leverage Jumia.com.ng, konga.com etc. to promote your products. On this e-commerce websites, you can create a merchant account with them which will allow you sell your products on their website. The cool thing about them is they help to deliver your products to any part of the country and your job is to only supply the T-shirt to them when someone orders for your product. Jiji.ng is also a great way to promote your website.
With all this said, let me point out something. There is no business that started and immediately started making money overnight. It takes time and consistency so be willing to put in the time and hard work for your business to succeed.
